    Kefir Recipe: Raspberry Popsicle Offers Heartburn Relief

    If you suffer from acid reflux or heartburn, you will be happy to know that kefir may give you some relief. Kefir is a tangy, drinkable yogurt packed with probiotics (good bacteria for your gut). It tastes a lot like Greek yogurt but has three times the probiotics. Probiotics set up a good environment for digestion and, in turn, help to prevent painful heartburn symptoms, such as a burning sensation in the throat or chest after eating.

    Our bodies need a specific amount of stomach acid to digest food properly. Studies have shown that heartburn symptoms can be caused by low levels of stomach acid in some cases. Insufficient stomach acid can lead to bacterial overgrowth and to various diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which is a chronic form of acid reflux/heartburn. Kefir and other fermented products that are high in probiotics can help this issue by naturally balancing your gut bacteria.

    Another way to prevent symptoms is to choose more alkaline and low-fat foods. The banana, raspberries and strawberries in this recipe are all low in acid. Also, since most dairy items contain a lot of fat, look for low-fat kefir, which only has about 2 grams per cup.

    Ingredients (6 popsicles – 3.33 ounces each):

    • 1 cup low-fat plain kefir
    • 1 large ripe banana, sliced
    • 1 cup raspberries + a few extra
    • 1 cup strawberries, sliced
    • 1 teaspoon honey
    • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

    Directions:

    1) Place all ingredients in a blender and mix well.
    2) Cut a few extra raspberries in half and place a half into the bottom of each popsicle mold. Then carefully pour the smoothie mixture into each mold about ⅓ full.
    3) Drop another raspberry half into each mold. Pour some more of the smoothie mixture in and repeat the layering until the molds are full (to the “fill” line). Place the popsicle stick into each mold and the cap on top.
    4) Place into freezer for about 4-6 hours or until popsicles are frozen.
