We typically think of our gut as the place where our bodies break down food for digestion. And while this is true, this part of our gastrointestinal tract is capable of so much more. The human gut houses a large part of the immune system and more than 100 trillion gut bacteria which play an active role in mood balance, metabolism and vitamin synthesis.
You may not give your gut much thought when it’s functioning as it should, but problems can quickly arise when your gut microbiota fall out of balance. Constipation, bloating, gas, bad breath, and moodiness are just a few indicators that you have too much bad bacteria growing in your gut. Here are some other signs that should cause to you take notice of what’s going on in your digestive tract:
Do you find that you pick up every cough, sniffle and virus that’s going around? The problem may lie in your gut. Because such a large part of the immune system resides in this part of your body, frequent illness could be your first indicator of a bacterial imbalance.
One of the most common signs of acid reflux is dental erosion, or dissolving of tooth enamel. If your dentist notices that the surfaces of your teeth are becoming worn, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or gastroenterologist for further investigation. Lifestyle modifications, medications and changes to your diet can help keep acid reflux under control and prevent further damage to your teeth.
An itchy, burning rash on your skin could be caused by eczema, or it could be the result of gastrointestinal problems. Celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that is triggered by consuming gluten, can produce a rash on the elbows, knees, scalp, back, and buttocks. Psoriasis and acne may also be caused by bacterial imbalance in the gut.
Poor mental health
If you suffer from depression and anxiety, your symptoms may be linked to an unbalanced gut. Researchers have found that some individuals with certain mental disorders also suffer from bacterial imbalance in their digestive tract. A healthy gut produces positive effects that can be felt throughout the entire body! Do your part to maintain a healthy bacterial balance by consuming a high-fiber diet that is rich in probiotics. Increasing the amount of good bacteria in your gut will keep bad bacteria under control and increase your body’s ability to fight off infection.
