Don’t Get Stuck in a Rut! Add Some Variety to Your Workout Routine

01. 13. 2014

Albert Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Chances are, he wasn’t talking about exercise, but the principle still applies. Workout routines need variety to keep them interesting and effective. If you’re stuck in an exercise rut, consider these options to revamp your workout and keep things fresh.

Take a Class

If you’ve gotten bored with the same tired, old routine, then fitness classes are the perfect way to shake things up. Most gyms and health clubs offer a wide variety of classes, including Pilates, yoga, Zumba, kickboxing, indoor cycling and water aerobics. Don’t be intimidated just because you’re new to the class. (Remember, even the front-row rock stars were once first-timers!) A certified instructor will give you basic pointers and tell you what equipment you will need. Remember to work at your own level, and most importantly, stick with it! You’ll improve with every class, and before you know it, you’ll be one of the regulars.

Set a New Goal

Nothing supercharges your workout like setting your eyes on a new achievement. Maybe you’d like to run a half marathon or take up distance cycling. Perhaps you have an old pair of jeans you’d like to be able to wear again. Your goal can be anything you choose; what’s most important is that you give yourself something to work towards. This will give you a sense of purpose in your workout and help you stay motivated.

Take It Outside

Outdoor exercise is a great way to throw some variety into your workout routine. Hiking, trail running and cycling are some effective (and fun!) options that will torch calories as you experience the great outdoors. You’ll enjoy fresh air, sunshine and a change of scenery – none of which can be found on a treadmill! Check out local parks and nature trails to see what is available in your area.

Try Circuit Training

Circuit training is the ultimate solution to a monotonous workout routine. With a new exercise every few minutes, you won’t have time to be bored! Circuit training involves a sequence of exercises that are completed at maximum effort with little to no rest in between. Not only is circuit training fast-paced, it’s extremely effective! You’ll burn 30 percent more calories than weight training, and you’ll reap more benefits than cardio alone (Source: Fitness Magazine).

Changing up your workout routine is a great way to start enjoying exercise again. You’ll feel challenged, stay motivated and avoid that dreaded weight-loss plateau. So get out there and try something different – you might just discover a new favorite way to stay fit!
